The arrival part 2

As arranged I attended my appointment at the hospital, the scan still showed baby was very low but also my blood pressure was high and there was protein in my urine, which had never been a problem before. So I was booked in for an induction the next day, they wanted me to stay overnight but they didn't have any beds available!!!

The next day 8am sharp I arrived at the hospital with my bags packed and fear in my heart, at 10am I was given the medicine to start me off.

They had to monitor the baby's heart throughout the day but Rachel my midwife said that I should walk around regularly because that will bring on a labour. So that's what me and mom did. About 5pm we both woke up from a nap and we thought we would have another walk around, afterwards I planned on trying to get mom to buy me chicken and chips from the local chippy.

Half way down the corridor I was stopped in my tracks by a sharp pain followed by a trickle of water which I thought must be my waters breaking. However as there was not much water mom asked "are you sure you haven't wet yourself". Obviously I was outraged and replied of course not but really I was thinking maybe I have wet myself especially as I constantly needed the toilet!!! The pain was still coming but I wasn't sure if it was contractions so we went to the nurses station and Rachel said she will come and check me. By that time the pain was getting worse and all I was thinking is if these are not contractions then God help me.

Rachel gave me some co-codamol and was about to leave the cubical when I had another (what I know now) contraction and she thought she should check me over. Now this is when the fun started, the baby was so low that her head was stopping the water coming out. So she quickly pressed the emergency button and another nurse (who was a bit shirty because she thought I had pressed it) came in to take me to a delivery room. There were no rooms ready as this was happening very quickly. It was only 5.15pm and I had shown no other signs that I was this close to having my baby.

They were running around sorting everything out and they kept saying when you feel ready to push just do it. Now, all I was thinking is you must be crazy because if I push and the baby came out nobody was ready to catch her as everyone was still doing stuff and nobody was wearing gloves.

My contractions had slowed down a little and Rachel was saying on my next push I need to keep going through the burning because this might be my last. I was not convinced as I hadn't been in there long but she was right and Zaynah Faye Thompson was born on the last big push at 5.52pm. She weighed 6lb 2 and was 49cm long.

My mom cut the cord and I had the best tea and toast I've ever tasted in my life.

Zaynah's first visitors were her uncle Chris, Aunty Maxine and godmother Julia.
